A lot of conservatives say they hate unions, and the main argument seems to be something like, "they're greedy," or "it's legalized extortion."

And certainly it's true that people who belong to unions make more (about 25% more than a comparable non-union worker).

So presumably, these conservatives think Americans are getting paid too much.

hahaha.. Yea right.. The average pay in the U.S. is about 12-13 bucks an hour.. A CEO of an oil company gets a 30 million dollar Christmas bonus and they complain about a unionized worker getting $20 an hour? please...

What planet are you living on? I think everybody who wasn't born into wealth or already has a 4 year degree makes barely enough money to get by. Unions or no-unions is all a buch of political horse hockey. The problem with this country is there are too many people who are too lazy to work. No wonder why so many people can sit back on their lazy duff's and run their mouths about what is good for the working people of this country. Try working hard for a living and you'll see what I'm trying to say.

You become a business owner. Manage your employees in a way that will both bring you a reasonable amount of profit and also give your employees enough of a sense of satisfaction that they don't need to join a union. If that happens, then at that point are your employees paid less and have less benefits that a unionized employee does? If so, then unionized employees are in fact being paid too much.

If it's not legalized extortion, why does a person HAVE to pay into the union to be able to work?

Also, why does a person who slacks off and barely does his/her job get the same amount of pay as a Sugar Honey Iced Tea hot worker, going above and beyond? Shouldn't the person who has initiative be paid more, or should they be stuck in a pay rate?

Why do you think people working harder for more money is wrong?

Doesn't a person have a right to work and keep their own money?

Like I said, the mafia did the same thing with business owners..."Pay us and we'll protect you".

No, the average American worker does not get paid to much. But the politicians do. Did you know that they get 100% of their pay when the retire? That they vote themselves huge pay increase by attaching the to a bill that is going to be passed, I know that back in the early 1990 they voted themselves a pay increase of over $30,000.00, which is way more than the average head of household makes.

Well given the size of the U.S. economy, and the fact that it seems to hum along, I would say that workers are not paid too much.

However, I often wonder how businesses can survive sometimes. For instance, say there is a worker who is paid 30K/year. Then the company has to pay something like 6.5% of that salary in Medicare/Unemployment taxes, if there are benefits, they have to pay for that too, plus retirement contributions, etc. Just seems like the cost of a worker you pay 30K would actually be closer to 40K/year.

Of course, I am a huge cheapskate. I am paid mid double digits at my job now, and personally think I am overpaid.

No, this is the reason i don't like unions

They FORCE wages to go higher, now this may sound good, but not for someone like my neighbor. He rarely works because he is being forced to be paid so much, when someone making $10 less an hour can do the same job. So the company does not work him, and thus, my neighbor needs to live off of welfare at times, which is just stupid.

Don't get me wrong, I think Unions are a good thing to have, i just think they are out of control now, sort of like the ACLU and affirmative action

I dont think so.. Look at the rate of house forclosure or the rate cars are being repossed.. Its the companies out sourcing work that keeps ua under paid.

my biggest complain with unions is that they were created to protect the lazy, do nothing worker from losing his/her job for not performing. i could care less what a union member is paid. in the line of work im in, it doesnt bother me one bit.
