If the fluid level is OK, and like already mentioned by others, do a trans filter and fluid change and be very careful and inspect for metal in pan and even cut the old filter open and inspect it thoroughly. Although fluid does get dark red with age (absolutely normal) black fluid and fluid that smells really "loud and putrid" may be a problem. An item that does go bad on some of the newer autos in general now days is called the pressure governor. But this is only one of many problems you could be having. Lucky for you the car should be seeting codes in the computer if it is actually slipping or if you are having any other codes that would cause similar problems. Auto zone does free computer scans to give you a head start take a pen and paper to write the codes down or you probably will forget them, good luck.

If you have an AOD transmission Check the TV cable at the throttle body and make sure its not sticking they are also known to have their ends snap off because its made out of plastic that will make the transmission Shift real funny and sometimes it will not do over 35MPH without excessive Revs. And if the fluid has never been changed for the transmission there will be a piece of plastic with an O-ring around it. it looks like a bobber that you use for fishing. That piece is a Shipping plug. Ford was too lazy to remove it when putting in the dipstick tube they just shoved the plug into the transmission pan and it just moves around not hurting anything just remove it when you put the pan back on.

Did you change the tranny filter and fluid? You can give it a shot and I would because it is relatively inexpensive. If you do this and find excessive metal in the pan it's probably already too late. There are several decent oil additives on the market which claim to help these problems and you might get lucky with one of them. You should however start saving for a rebuild job or replacement if you want to keep this car, but shop for the best warranty as well as price because as you learned this is a real problem with ford cars and truck from that period.

Check your fluid with the car warmed up sitting in park ideling..... if the fluid is fine then take it to a mechanic, it could be a few things, torque convertor slipping, bands slipping, clutch plates slipping, pressure regulator, stuff like that. I know that fluid level plays a big part. I bought a used 03 durango and the previous owner added like 4 quarts too many and the trans shifted at all the wrong rpms.... transmissions are touchy.

try changing the transmission fluid and filter. add some Lucas transmission additive to it and see what happens. If it does not take care of the problem within a day or two take it to a reputable transmission shop for an evaluation.

well were any issues noticed/recommended at the service? is the fluid brown,black....it's probably due to a service.and as far as hearing about mechanical problems, do those problems apply to your car.for example, if there are 100,000 cars made that have that problem are they in series way before your car was produced or much later or does it pertain to yours date of production?each one of the 100,000 may have that problem, but 1 car of 977,856 million all together is not likely. besides you need to make sure you don't have a leak,a fuel restriction, engine sensor
catalytic restriction, ignition, computer or other problem 1st...goodluck

I'm guessing you have an AOD 4 speed tranny.... I have had many problems with this tranny when they have been sitting for a while but they always came back to normal after a while of steady use.
