Because that's the way it's been since prehistoric times. Animals kill other animals for food, and even though we are much more evolved, we still retain this habit.

Thats the way food chain is.... Animals kill each other to fulfill their need for hunger.

However, humans have been made differently as we have been blessed with intelect and the ability to think before we act.
Thus, many of us feel the act of killing another creature is cruel and brutal.
Also, our body has been made to digest vegetarian food better.
Our teeth are designed to chew leaves, more than flesh, our intestines take longer to digest non-veg as compared to veg.

Also, non veg is more tamsik in nature (foods which make ur mind restless) whereas vegetarian food (like pulses, green vegetables and fruits) are all satvik in nature (foods which keep ur mind calm and easy)

But I guess, people kill and eat animals cause of a lack of compassion for other creatures.

Survival of the fittest.

We became the fittest with the intelligence to kill anything we want, which started out as survival (hunger) and progressed as we used our intelligence to find other ways to feed our hunger and survive.

After that, it became a luxury and a taste, now humans kill for variety and pleasure.

Anything you want from alligators, ostrich, to birds of any sort or mammals can be found to be eaten some place in the world.

The simple answer?

Its kill or be killed.
Eat or die.

My belief is that God put creatures here on earth to provide for us. Even if you are eating carrots or oranges you are still eating a living creature. If you stopped eatiing both plants and animals and animal byproducts the human race would suffer severely. After all you can't live off water!

Either we are vegetarians or we kill to eat. Rabbits eat veggies and I eat the Rabbit. Circle of life have you not seen Lion King
Beach Bum- Hate to tell you this but there are now millions of women that hunt and the numbers are growing. Need to leave that beach alittle more

You have answered your own question. They kill because they want to still their hunger. (no offence to vegetarians)

Not only people kill other creatures, many animals kill other creatures, too.

A sweet pet cat, or a loving pet-dog, and most pet fish.......... they kill or let you kill for them............

It seems you have a moralistic ax to grind. Do not expect to win too many converts among omnivores.
