the cashier is not a psychiatrist, the cashier is not a doormat so you can verbally abuse them over a $5 item, the cashier doesn't receive any tips, the cashier's job is to scan your items and bag them, take your money put it in the cash register and take care of the next customer.

i had a woman YELL at me over a box of candy because it couldn't scan! I had to look for another box of candy so it could scan. and she yelled at me again because i took up her time. LOL.
They should have security at stores. So they can escort rude and irate customers out the door until they calm down.a

if customers want a shrink, go to a psychiatrist. if customers want to verbally abuse, go to anger management.
if customers are impatient, drink chamomile it will calm you down.

I am very polite to cashiers. It's not like they're the ones who have the monopoly over the crappy prices. How much do you think they're actually being paid? I also think it's incredibly rude when people chat on their cellphones in the checkout.

The previous answer is partially correct, some people are just rude by nature! Many people are just frustrated by some display of incompetence at the store/restaurant (item is sold out, mispriced, etc).
Some people feel the need to expess some degree of superiority and the cashier is a lower echelon individual who usually can't defend themselves from such attacks because they don't want to lose their job or are easily intimidated.

It's hard, but try not to take it personally. The way they see it, you are synonymous with the store. Therefore, they will take out any frustrations about the store on you. You are their point of contact.
Take pride in that. See if you can be kind and helpful and calm them down. If you manage this, it will get you far in the workforce and in life. You will feel good about yourself and you will be helping people. Put yourself in their shoes. Many times, they just want someone to sympathize with them and the concerns that they have.

Because they can be..and get away with it. And if the situation gets worse, you can loose your job, but no one can fire a customer. As some one who works in the service industry, I think I am qualified to answer this.

Unfortunately, there's no one ruder (or more stupid at times) than the American public. Anyone who doesn't believe that needs to work a "customer contact" job for one day. You'd be amazed!

I am nice to Cashiers because I know they don't make the best money and it is stressful to deal with the public. More power to you. Peace. :)

because some customers think they're better than the cashiers so they act rude towards them.
