POINTSETTIAS ARE NOT HOUSEPLANTS! Most people here in America do not know this, but the pointsettia plant is actually a bush that grows in Mexico. The ones that are sold here in America have been chemically treated to stay at a dwarf size, those are the ones everyone gets at holiday time. After a few months, your plant will start to look "gangly"...just not looking right and never quite filling out the way you want it to. This is due to the chemical treatment of this bush plant. Long story short...you will never be able to grow most of the pointsettias that are given during the holidays for more than a few months before they begin to look terrible. This is when most people throw them away. The chemical retardent will prevent you from having a nice looking plant, so don't plan on keeping them.

Poinsettias need light but not direct sunlight. Direct sun will scorch the leaves. Make sure to water it but do not keep it overly wet. Water when the top of the soil starts feeling dry. They dislike drafts and too much heat. A warm bright spot not near any drafty windows or heat sources is ideal. My mom gets these plants for Christmas every year and by keeping them like this she is able to enjoy them for a very long time.

The best way to care for your plant is to place the container in one of those clear plastic saucers found in the garden dept. and fill the bottom with pebbles and water. The plant's soil should not be left to soak up the water by its roots. The water in the saucer combined with the warmth of the room acts as a humidifier.
Keep the soil moist, not soggy. Depending on your room this could mean a daily soaking, a rinsing and one more soaking before putting it back in its pebble bath. Check the soil by putting your index finger in the soil. If it goes in to the first knuckle, that's the perfect moisture level. If it stays dry to the first knuckle, water it!
A sure way to kill a poinsettia is to have it in a draft. They do not like cold air in contact with their leaves or their roots. These are tropical plants.

Keep the soil moist but not overly wet. They do good in direct sunlight or florescent light. A humidifer is good also since they are tropical plants.
They last for many years. I have saved ones that were only stalks.

Remember, poinsettias "blossom" only because their leaves have been kept away from sunlilght for many months. So you do not need to give them light, to the contrary. But DO keep the soil moist at all times to maintain good leaf show.
