I was in Egypt in September, and it was quite hot. Not only the sand outside the pyramids was hot, but the sun was just overbearing. I wore running shoes, because I knew I would do a lot a walking, and I had no problems. Mates that I traveled with wore sandals, and I heard no complaints out of them, I'd say the temp was 110 F, if not higher. I think you can just get used to the heat on your feet. The women, wore burkas, which is a long black cloth that covers your whole body including your head and face (only eyes show through) and they could do that because the clothing is loose and doesn't cling to the skin, so although they wore all black, they could feel a breeze throught their clothes.

u wear sandals Because its that hot.
wear shoes and ur foot does not have enough ventilation and they sweat and it stinks.
besides a sole of a sandal and a shoe are equally effective at keeping ur foot and the sand separate. the sandal is open at the top, not the bottom.
actually now they mostly wear shoes except for the few remaining nomads. sand travel is usually undertaken by 4WD air-conditioned vehicles.
