It will make them permanently a darker color, but nice and supple if you rub it in real good and work the leather at the same time. Also, if they are a very good quality, there might be a whitish "bloom" on them, which I've read you're supposed to rub in.
Be sure and only use neatsfoot oil or an oil designed specially for use on tack! Vegetable or olive oil will go rancid and make the leather stink!

Oiling can't hurt the reins (unless used excessively) so you can if you want. It helps keep the reins and bridle in good condition, and it also makes them suppler, or easier to handle. Just watch out for silver, because if it's a show bridle, the oil can tarnish the silver or other adornments. You should oil them regularly to keep them in good condition, but not necessarily the day after you get them.

Yes, it will make it much easier to deal with. There's nothing more annoying than trying to buckle/unbuckle your nose band or throat latch etc. and the leather wont bend. I would definitely oil it if it seems stiff, but be careful not to soak it. You'll have to take the entire bridle apart to really oil it, and it may help to clean it with some saddle soap and a small sponge too. If you do this, make sure you soap it first, clean that off, then oil after wards.

I would...if they have not already been...oil them fairly heavily (don't drowned them) and lay them outside in the sun to dry...makes them much easier to handle and they lay the way they should. Better to do it a couple of times than get them too limp the first time with too much oil!

Yes m'am. If you do they are more flexible. If you dont oil it then it could be too stiff to even bend around your horses head.

yes because you want them supple and loose not stiff. if you dont oil them then they will become harder to hold and that can effect the contact on the horses mouth.
