I been working at the same job now for 3 years.I wasn't able to do any extracurricular activites because my single mother needed financial support and someone to watch my brother and sister.Do I still have a chance in college?I work in service so I deal with people everyday. Will this show I have people skills?

You might consider writing your application essay about your situation. You could talk about all the skills you have learned in your job and what having such responsibilities has taught you.

If you have reasonably good grades and do reasonably well on the SATs, I think with a thoughtful explanation of your situation, you should certainly still have a chance at college.

NEVER think of your education as a time waster. When they ask for experience list the courses you've taken that would fit under the pre-requisites. Did you do any internships /co-operative work during your degree time , what were they in? That would be listed under both education and work experience. How long have you had a computer? That counts as experience too, especially if you took computer courses in high school and even middle school. Are you flexible and can translate from computer speak into regular english so the average person can understand what you're saying. Have you considered applying to apple or microsoft, ibm , even to some of the stores who sell computers? Have you considered doing repair and are you qualified to do that? Many young graduates will only consider the FIELD they graduated in as a proper job , any working experience is a valuable tool you can use on a job application as experience. Don't spite your nose because it isn't that one particular job, if you can apply what you know to all kinds of different situations rather than just one employers will find you very valuable.

Yes, especially if you have increased your responsibilities while at the job, and particularly if you are in any kind of supervisory role which translates to leadership.

There is NO substitution for good grades and good test scores. However, if all qualified applicants are considered, those with leadership, community service and talent are chosen first. Try to "spin" your job experience to show leadership and talent. You probably don't have a whole lot of free time, but make sure that you have some volunteer hours to show community service too. Best of luck to you!

Yes. They will look at your job as an extra curricular activity and working there for three years will just be more in your favor. Shows you are responsible and willing to work (and also that you have people skills :-) ) So, just make sure your grades and essays (if required) are up to par and you will do great in college.

Probably better than many people who are all wrapped up in their highschool club word and dont know about having to work for a living

I applaud your willingness to work to help Mom, instead of being a whiney kid blaming Mom for your hard life or lack of expensive.

She is lucky and must be proud.

If your grades are good, I would say that this will increase your chances of getting into college - it shows your maturity, willingness to work, you ability to face adversity head-on and win.

Stand up and take a bow for being a great kid.
