DSL stands for Digital Subscriber Line, which basically means that you are dedicated a line by your telephone company for use to get online. This is totally seperate from your phone and does not required you to "dial in" to access your ISP (internet service provider) .

All this make DSL much faster than regular dial up.

However, not everyone can access DSL, you need to live within a few miles of the telco (telephone company) hub in order to get DSL. Call them and they should be able to let you know if you can get the service.

Another high speed internet choice is Cable internet. This is provided by some cable companies though coaxial cable lines(the line used to give you cable TV service), and this is even faster than DSL and has a much wider range.

To give you an idea of speed improvements, I currently have Cable internet, a average size 4 MB mp3 file takes say 30 seconds or less to download with cable internet. With DSL that same file size would take about 1 to 5 minutes to download, and with dial up internet that file would take 20 to 30minutes to download.

In other words with cable internet I could download and burn a complete CD in under 30mins, a task that would take several hours with dial up.

Absolutely. I have downloaded a 640 MB package within 4 hours. That's the capacity of an Entire CD-R.

With a 56 KB modem you could try, but it would likely say that it will take days, to download.

I have downloaded a bunch of small files with a 56 KB Modem ISP service. 40 MB Microsoft Windows XP patch took hours if the server Windows Update did not lose the connection.
A lot of wasted time, without a software tool to start over where it last left off, if the server goes down so it picks up where the software downloaded the last packet,

If you don't have that kind of a software tool installed and you lose the connection, with an ISP 56 KB service, you have to start all over getting the connection getting the download started, and then baby sit the download. And that get real tiresome after a few times.

If you are going to download large files. often, get your ISP's DSL service.

DSL is much faster and much more officiant then Dial-Up. I don't think anything more then DSL is necessary, but that is just me I don't see any need for SUPER fast internet, but there is no reason to stick to the Dial-Up that is ridicules. DSL is good :D

Yes. With DSL there's no annoying dialup tone. You're connected all of the time to the Internet.

depends on the speed you get but it is a minimum of 10 times faster, that would be a 512 kbps speed, dial up is 56 kbps max

downloads in less than a minute? I'll stick with DSL until they drag my computer out of my dead arms.

nicely, basically searching on the numbers 56k vs. one hundred plus ok sounds like two times as quickly. yet i do not understand. i understand the low-cost one isat least two times as severe priced. until eventually you compromise for 3 circumstances as a lot as dial up "tier one" does it make it that a lot swifter basically pondering mathematics. so what's the truth? a lot propaganda and hype what's the truth. won't be able to trust any damn organisation for the turth. or authorities regulation. trial and mistake seems the basically thanks to carry close some thing lately. all liars.
