My father made a New Years resolution to read more books, I'm hoping to jumpstart him by getting a book for him to read. The problem is, I have no clue what to get him! I want to buy him a relatively short novel, but I want it to be interesting enough to keep him glued to it. He seems to have a short attention span as well as a short patience when it comes to books.

I usually see him read self-help books on improving his quality of life, self or financial circumstances so I really have no clue what to look for.

Another new year is just about. If he's still into self-books, then probably he is a wonderful person! (many of us often see our new year resolutions fizzling out soon after making them.) He may be tired of helping himself with similarly written books now.

Get Dad self-help book of a different kind . . . the mental type . . . . "The Death of Ivan Ilych" He'll love it because unlike Ivan, he'll know someone (his daughter!) cares for him.
Problem is he may not make any more New Year resolutions after that encounter!!

If you want a short novel, get him "The Old Man and the Sea" by Hemingway. If he is interested in today's politics and problems, get him "Fiasco" by Thomas Ricks. If he would like to read about the famous Iwo Jima photo, buy him Flags of Our Fathers by James Bradley.

Passages- by Gail Sheehy (passages one makes from one age/lifestyle to another- nonfiction).
Also, a book of short stories, and that could be Hitchcock, Roald Dahl (he's not just for children), Hemingway, Somerset Maugham, all great.

Some middle age man like King James Bible. It is a great gift especially have his name engrave on the front cover. It is a gift that would last for a life time, and a great gift to pass on to his generation.

Get him "Tuesdays with Morrie" by Mitch Albom. It can be read in one seating, but is a powerful and compelling read.
