Does it function like a VCR where you can watch one program while taping another? I had a DVR from Dish Network and I was very disappointed that you couldn't watch one program while taping another.

Some DVRs can and other can't. I believe you can record from one channel while watching tv on another channel if you use the timer/schedule recording function. Check the manufacturer website for the features.

I have a panasonic dmre80h It has an 80 Gb HDD and can burn dvds as well as record to the hard drive. You can watch something and tape something else very much like a VCR, the only limitation that I have found is that it will not make copies of purchased DVDs that are copy protected.
