If beer was illegal it would be sold underground with a huge mark up. The same with just about anything. Why is legal prostitution so expensive. You can get it illegaly for cheaper so why not add some competition.

Prostitution is an institution that predates all others, and unlike something like drugs or alcohol there is a legal form of it. Its called dating.

Since its a social contract (like marriage) rather than consumption of a commodity, different rules apply in pricing. You can hire a cheap crack whore for $10 or $20 for a basic sex act - because the hooker needs the money for a commodity, and incurs no production costs in proving the service.

In the case of a commodity, production costs, transportation, and an area of distribution all impact availability, and thus costs...

In the case of prostitution (or dating), the transaction requires nothing more than a condom (if that)... and perhaps some attractiveness physically, or a willingness to perform acts that the wife might not be performing...

Essentially, the comparison is an apples and igloos kind of comparison.

In countries with legal prostitution, prices vary by service and what services are provided (to some extent this is true of 'real' rather than desperate or addict prostitution in areas where it is illegal), as well as the amount of time involved.

So there is compensation for both services rendered and what services are provided. Escort services (legal prostitution where prostitution is illegal) are an example of this.

As far as pricing goes, I have a friend from college who is employed as a dominatrix... she charges $500 a pop for no touching domination of men... there is literally no touching involved, strictly her dominating the man involved.

You could get the same service for much less - but she's a professional even though its technically illegal.

The truly cheap prostitutes involve extreme risk - AIDS/HIV, STD's, the possibility of being robbed... or worse...

As for the competition element - until society eliminates young womens need for money, and poverty in general - offering productive, careers, there will always be desperate women offering their bodies cheaply...

On the other hand, in a proper society, women and men will both have the option of choosing the oldest profession, but not forced into it...

Because unlike beer, prostitution is heavily looked down upon and makes great blackmail. If you pay an illegal prostitute the value of the blackmails goes up. Legal prostitution is kind of an insurance policy, thats why its soo expensive.

There is more of a perception of legal prostitution being safer. To some extent that may be true. With illegal prostitution one is a bit more at risk of catching something or being mugged. And, of course, it all depends on what country your from. I would suggest it's better to just find yourself a significant other.

Well, I know in Nevada, where it is legal, they have to have annual checkups. And be tested for STDS and Aids. On regular basis. And, not sure, use condoms. And they have in house doctors. Is oldest profession around. So they say. But I think if I were into have a prostitue, I would feel it is worth expense knowing all these things are being done to keep you from becoming diseased. Worth not getting aids!

That's a great question. It does, however, come back to the old economic adage, supply and demand. The legal prostitutes charge what the market will bear. Sigh, if only it were affordable.

illegal prostitutes are desparate for money so they do it cheaper and they are also "messed up" cause most of them are obessed with getting their next smack.legal protitutes are good at whatever they do and many people would pay alot for good pleasure.

Maybe the extra money goes to STD testing and Condoms. If I was that desperate I would throw out the extra cash for safety

ITS MORE EXPENSIVE THAN YOU THINK.

Defend the poor and fatherless; Do justice to the afflicted and needy. Deliver the poor and needy; Free them from the hand of the wicked.
