Maybe it is because learing to fly is really dangerous. They are probably just very concerned for your safety. Remember the Yankees pitcher that died a couple months ago? Students sometimes crash and that is probably terrifying for your family to think about.

People are afraid of change. They have "learned" who you are and what you do, and have defined you as "this person". We all do it. We categorize people and put them in boxes of acceptable behavior. We can't very well approach each person as a brand new entity everytime we see them, so this is an efficient way of dealing with our relationships. You want to learn to fly? Gasp, that is not the you we have in our minds, that is not what we would have predicted, you are behaving outside the norm we have established for you and it makes us nervous. We will try to shove you back into the box we have created for you because we are more comfortable with it, now get back in there.
On the other hand, they may be worried about safety as well as your ability to handle flying. The one person you need to get on your side is your wife. Talk to her honestly about this. LISTEN to her, find out her fears. Then you can address them one-by-one. Most important, tell her this is important to you, and you'd like her to at least try to support you. Don't worry about the fam, they are incidental, but your wife will support you once you allow her to share your dream and the reasons for it.
(It is interesting that you refer to the most important person in your life as "the" as in "the wife" like she was a thing, like "the toaster." ouch

Maybe because they are consider for your saftey and want you home rather then flying, but the truth is you can't let anyone get in the way of your dreams, you only live once, and you'll resent them if you let that dream go, stick to it, and live your life.

Sometimes when family members see us have other interest that never seem to complete or follow thru past the first sometimes difficult try, then find it hard to be upfront supportive with next venture.

The only way you can prove them wrong is to pursue it and stick with it until accomplish the goals you desire!

for one they are probably scared about the "what if" senerio and you have to sympathize them on that.

some people also tend to be closed minded about and outgoing hobby like flying a plane. if once you do it they may eventually come around.

because they had a different purpose in life other than your dreaming of things that you want to do. I had this problem. I couldn't take credit for things that i have done unless i included my folks in it. I gave it a shot. But there were times where our lives are reminiscent. They are more reminiscent of hard times. But you should try to do something for yourself and congratulate yourself.

It's a risky thing. They are probably worried about your safety. But if you really want to, then go for it. When we love someone, we are suppose to support them in making their dreams come true. Good luck.
