I've been teaching English as a Second/Foreign language for the last couple of years, and I would like to get started on a career back home in the US. I'm looking into post bacculurate degrees that would certify me in Washington state. I want to stick with teaching, but Math and English seem so boring. How tough is it to find jobs teaching high school History?

I've thought about teaching math, but the idea of teaching something that I hate for like 30 years just terrifies me. Not that I really hate math, I'm pretty good at it, it just seems so... heartless.

I received this information from NEA's annual magazine.
For Washington State:
Beginning Salary- $30,159
Average Salary- $45,724
Job Market- Teacher shortage in special education, math, and science.
For current job openings visit www.wateach.com
For certification requirements visit: www.k12.wa.us/certification/

You may want to consider going to the website for job openings to just see what is open. You may find a few jobs open for history but like some else has said that if you don't coach it will be hard to get the job. My first major was history and I wanted to teach high school, but when I was told that I probably would not get a job I changed my major. Have you considered teaching history at the middle school level? I have noticed that many history teachers at middle school are not involved in coaching. Good luck in whatever you decide to do.

As the first poster noted, you'll have a hard time finding a job teaching history unless you are also a coach. Most of the history positions are given to coaches, which is a shame, because I hate that history is treated so simplisticaly.
If I were you, I'd stick with MATH. You'll never lack employment if you can teach that. Most school districts are desperate for math teachers.

I can tell you that you will have an abundance of job opportunities if you decide to go with the Math!!! There is a definite need for good Math teachers all over! History not so much.

Have you thought about going into MS Math and making it actually "fun" for the kids to learn? There is a definate need ofr that to be done! You might think how that might be something you could try achieving!

Good luck and hope you can work that one out!

There are a lot of teachers who have history as a teachable subject. Several of them do not have a teaching job yet. Be willing to diversify your options if you want to get into teaching.
