I have a 2004 PT cruiser with 20,000 miles. The "check engine" light came on this morning. I immediately called my mechanic who told me it was safe to drive--that the light would come on if the oil, coolant, and any fluids were low. At the same time there was a really loud squeal which I'm assuming came from a loose belt. I can't get it fixed until after Christmas. Can I drive it or should I just park it and wait to take it in?? I love this car and don't want to do anything that would cause more damage!!!

well you should fix the belt befor driving i but besides that if its running fine with the check engen light is on and driving fine it will be ok to drive and as for your mechanic telling you that its the oil and coolent you may want to look for new one cause the check engen light is for the the sensors and fuel and transmission and abs and airbags nothing about oil and coolent

The yellow light has nothing to do with the oil Its a Emissions control light if the light stays on that means it has set a code and the emissions will need to be serviced like the o-2 censors EGR valve etc, they will not pass the smog test with the light on, its emissions related, that's why its w yellow light, no damage you can drive it from California to new york and it will be fine in regard to that light, and it will go off if you reset the cods , you need a code reader to do this and it computer generated to come on at certain millage intervals, and the dealer will reset it and do nothing and charge you 150.00 dollars so if in doubt take to a ASE Shop for proper diagnoses

A squeal sound from under your hood is a belt. Open the hood and look at it. This is probably the reason your light is on. If it looks tight, it is ok to drive, but get it checked out soon. That is low mileage for the belt to start slipping, but possible. Change it regardless. If your light stays on after the new belt is installed, then it is probably emissions related and in most Chrysler products it is one or more sensors need replaced.

Many check engine lights are emissions related. If you have an auto parts store such as autozone or advanced auto parts (Northeast U.S.) they can scan your car for free and give you an idea of what is wrong. If you have a loose belt this should be adressed immediately so you won't be stranded on the road.

Take it to a shop and have a diagnostics test done on it.It will tell the mechanic exactly what the problem is then go from there . This testing machine will test everything on your car. It usually costs anywhere from
$30.00 to $60.00 depending on where you go.I would have this done before driving to far from home.

since when does "check engine" mean low coolant? your mechanic is off. i don't know what the issue is but what he's saying doesn't sound right at all. if you can wait, you shouldn't drive it. if you have to drive it, consult another mechanic before doing so. you may cause additional damage.
