I think Americans have always had a fascination with celebrities, but I do think it has reached the level of an unhealthy obsession. Celebrity news and gossip makes headlines in newspapers, on tv and the internet, when those stories do not deserve such treatment. Also, today's celebrities are not as classy as those from Hollywood of the past. We're obsessing over people who don't even deserve the attention they get.

If someone thought you were Jessica Alba, that is not such a bad thing. She is very pretty. :-)

Yes, today's society is too obsessed with celebrities and it is pretty pathetic if you ask me. Why would you want to look up to someone who doesn't benefit this world or inspires a person to better their life. Celebrities have a negative effect on our culture giving the impression that money and materialism is the way to live your life. Furthermore, there are people who have no life and focus so much on celeb gossip that they have excluded reality and have no idea what living is all about.

Well, society has always been obsessed with celebs. The only difference is that they used to actually be beautiful and talented. I mean damn, how do we go from Ginger Rogers to...Paris Hilton?

Yes, look at the buzz that occurs when celebs do everyday things. A select few people are so involved in celebs' lives that they can't live their own. Celebrities get away with things that you and I would be punished for in some way.

They were just as obsessed with

Frank Sinatra
Rock Hudson
Marilyn Monroe
Liz Taylor
Judy Garland
John Wayne

The difference now is that then the public wasn't allowed to know too much of their personal life. The movie studios protected them.

Things stay pretty much the same.

America doesn't have any royalty so in a way some of these celebrities take their place. Look they even have their own religion. Are there any average Joe scientologists?
