I have a Kenmore washing machine that makes a loud squeaking sound when it is fininshing up its spin cycle. It sounds like a brake is being applied probably to stop the spin cycle. But when it stops it makes a very loud squeal. Only when completing its spin cylcle.

It could be that the dampener pads have warn down and you have a metal on metal contact. This could give a noise similar to the noise you hear when the break pads on your car are worn down to metal.

Every time I have an appliance repair problem, the first place I go to is the library. The larger the library the better. You will find that there is a section there that has to do with repair of applicances, and in particular washers and dryers. These handly books will give your pictures and diagrams and a troubleshooting guide. If you have trouble with the spin cycle, it will have a section on that and it will tell you what to check. And if that's where the problem is, it will give you enough information to fix it yourself, if you have some basic mechanical skills. You may have buy a few parts the your local appliance parts store, but installing them is not as complex as you might think.
