there once was one plane of existence, how do we get more?

Note: all this assumes Quantum Physics' assertation that there is a parallel universe for every possibility is *true*.

Parallel universes don't spring into existence just for things like 'you are barely missed by a car and in some other universe, you were hit.' Quantum Physics says that every universe that can exist, does exist. For example, there is a universe where a single photon is in a different location.

This does not, however, necessarily mean that there are an infinite number of parallel universes. If space is finite, there would be a finite number of parallel universes, since there is a smallest distance that has any meaning (the Planck length.)

So, to answer your question, there has never been *one* universe. There has always been as many as there are possible "arrangements" for the universe. We don't get more, but they just simply exist. They aren't really created or destroyed, they just are.

The theory i remmeber hearing on this was that parallel universes are created all the time by chance--or by the decisions that we make. Say you almost get hit by a car. According to that theory, at that point a parallel universe could spring into existence, one where the car actually hits you.

Weird.

If I remember correctly, this conclusion was reached because someone puzzled out that photons, when they pass through a slot individually (one photon at a time) they seem to behave as though they are interacting with other photons. Somewhow this proves that the individual photon was interacting with other photons in other universes.

I know, I didn't follow the logic either.

Well, that probably wasn't the answer that you were looking for, but maybe it will give you a start.

A parallel universe is usually created when a science fiction writer gets him/herself into a jam that they can't "write" their way out of.

IF your sci-fi story if full of plot holes and stuff that makes no sense, then just open up a parallel universe where the good guys are evil, the bad guys are eviller, and let the general craziness cover the fact that your story is wafer thin and leaking logic.

Pretty much by chance say you get hit by a car an died , in another universe you lived every little thing we do makes an alternate universe.
