i recieved an early xmas present from my boyfriend that i personally picked out. it was a diamond right hand white gold 10k ring that was purchased at Belk's Department store.it cost about $450-500. i decided to do the "make up" test to see if it was real. (if you have on makeup u can drag the ring down ur face and if its real it will leave a dark streak.) the ring i got for xmas did not leave a dark streak but my other white gold ring did. they both have 10k imprinted on the inside of the bands. is the ring i got for xmas real or not??? if so why does it not leave a streak in makeup?? please help!

tricia b- if u have makeup on ur face u can drag ur ring across and if it leaves a dark mark it is real gold......and yes it does matter if its real or not because i certainly dont want to pay $500 for a ring thats not real!

Amy -
I presume your ring is real because it does have the 10k imprint on the inside of the band - it would be illegal for a jeweler to sell you a piece that was incorrectly labeled (either as the wrong material or incorrect caratage). Perhaps because your ring is 10 karat gold (meaning it has a greater percentage of metal alloys mixed with pure gold than 14k, 18k and 24k gold), your test may not be effective (or as effective) with a lower caratage of gold.
I'm sure that if the ring was purchased from a reputable department store that you purchased exactly what you thought you did. Check on the inside of the band again to see if the name of a country is also printed next to the 10k marking - another good indicator of quality jewelry.
If you're still skeptical, call the jeweler that sold the piece to you and ask them if they have any verification that it is real, or perhaps if they know of another test you can try. If all else fails, take it to another jeweler - they should be able to spot a counterfeit and should be able to do so quickly and probably free of charge.
Hope this helps!

You did not say what size the diamond is or if it is solitaire or cluster. I have never heard of the make up test either. Normally if it is imprinted with 10k inside band it is real unless it is 10k coated, but normally if 10k coated it will say on the box and it is normally not imprinted inside band. For 450-500 I hope it is real. I would hate to pay that much for a CZ. Take it to a jeweler, for a small fee they can tell you if it is genuine or not. good luck

If it is a complete circle, or fits around your finger in some other way, it is a real ring. If you are asking about whether it is made of a particular metal or if it has a particular stone in it, like a diamond, I would recommend taking it to a jeweler. May God bless and keep you.

If it was purchased at Belks then it is real. If you want to be sure go to a jewelry store and ask them if it is real and they will tell you free of charge.... That whole makeup test sounds like a "old wives tale".

Make Up test??? What the hell is that??? Go to your room's window and face the stone against the window glass. Try to cut it. if it cuts the glass is true diamond.

You can also take a glass or a mirror and rub it against the glass. If it scratches or appears to cut the glass, then it's real.
