The book I used waaaaay back when they first came out was this:

The Simple Solution to Rubik's Cube by James G. Nourse. There are a few copies for sale through abebooks.com: http://www.abebooks.com/servlet/SearchResults?sts=t&y=0&tn=simple+solution+rubik%27s+cube&x=0

This is one bookseller's description of it: The most popular, and most often reprinted book on Rubik's Cube, probably because it actually works. From back cover: "It features easy-to-memorise moves; it offers clear and steady progress; it presents few and uncomplicated decisions; it is independent of colour; it allows easy recovery from mistakes; it's guaranteed to work on any cube. Complete with hints, shortcuts and expert moves to cut your solving time. Exclusive section of new games, including speed cubing, competition cubing and cube alphabet." The author, a chemistry professor and group-theory mathematician, insists that the problem of solving Rubik's Cube is very similar to the daily problems he faces in chemistry.

Good luck!

I don't know what book you're talking about, but Tyson Mao has a tutorial on how to solve the cube at his website.
