The apprenticeship is 5 yrs. You apply at a union hall and if you are accepted (you take a math test) you are sent out to work soon and go to the school at night. Books/materials are provided. You're learning at night and on the job. At the end of the 5 years, you'll take a test and graduate (a nice little ceremony). In CA now a test is required also to have a license. You'll be a journeyman when you're done w/the apprenticeship. It's a good solid job choice. My husband has been one for years. His nephew followed him into the field. Hourly wages for journeyman are well over $40 in some areas. Union has benefits: medical, retirement. Some also contribute to a vacation fund which you can pull out when you need it.
