Well i want to buy a laptop for gaming and basic activities, so which one should i prefer

These are not the same. Athlon is one of AMD's processor famlies. Centrino is a set of features offered on Intel processors. Intel is a brand of a processor. Intel makes Centrino, Pentiums and Celerons. AMD makes Athlons and Semprons. Also, there are different subfamilies within each family. Your question doesn't really make any sense.
Can you please elaborate on what you are looking for?
Intel Core 2 Duo and Athlon 64 X2 are the processors you should be looking at, if you want the best for business and gaming.
As for which one is better Intel or AMD, neither. They are both good companies. The prices are rather competitive. Most gamers lean towards AMD Athlon 64 X2's Dual Core and business users lean towards Intel Core 2 Duo's

Well for general activities like web browsing, e-mail, word processing, viewing photos and movies, burning CDs etc. you won't have any problem, but in general laptops aren't good for hardcore gaming. Why? Most of the built-in video adapters are low-end to midrange. And unlike desktops, you can't just buy a better video card later- whatever it comes with is all you've got!
There are a few companies which offer premium video options (such as Dell) but that's not common. So 95% of the time, gamers will opt for desktops, which you can build with whatever components you want, and easily upgraded later.
Centrino is a set of features for Intel notebook chipsets & processors- it includes features such as networking, battery life etc. As the previous poster mentioned, Athlon is a line of CPUs from AMD, while Pentium is from Intel.
The best processor currently on the market is Intel's Core 2 Duo. Next best is AMD's Athlon X2 series, and below that the regular Athlon, Pentium-D, Pentium 4 etc.

Centrino (which is made by Intel,) is best because not only is it just as fast, it is also much more energy efficient (why it's used in battery operated laptops.) Laptops are more expensive but they really rock if you get the right one. Shop around at http://www.newegg.com for great service, prices, shipping, and consumer reviews. Centrinos are more expensive though. You get what you pay for dude!

I have found athlon to be great both for my desktop and laptop. Price was affordable and it works very well. No problems so far after two years of use
