The question doesn't make sure, you don't want to download or buy anything, your pc will be empty, useless!

1. Uninstall all the crap that came with it that you will never use.
2. Defrag the drive.
3. Do not use the Internet; if you do you must install a firewall and an anti-virus. I suggest Zone-Alarm and AVG or Avast. The big guys take up a lot more overhead, and they fail often.
4. Switch to Linux, cuz Windows needs constant updates. Macs are cute.
5. Me, I'm ready to drag my butt into the closet and pull out my Amiga. Amigados rules!

Other than that, computers are like modern cars. You must be dependent on other people; you can't know what's going on; you can't get under the hood to do any maintenance. You must download updates or you'll be dead on the side of the road.

The thrill is gone...
