Only Hope by Mandy Moore is a very, very common song to sing for auditions/try-outs. If you want something from a musical, try Summer Nights (duet), or Hopelessly Devoted to You from Grease. Think of Me from Phantom of the Opera is beautiful too. But I would definitely pick Only Hope--very pretty.

I am assuming that if she has to sing for her audition, that she is being considered for a singing role. I agree with others that have said you should choose something that has a simple melody. Choosing something age appropriate is also important- All That Jazz from Chicago or Think of Me from Phantom are too old for her. If she is going to have an accompianist, I would suggest going to a music store and looking for sheet music. Maybe she has a pop song that she loves that she would be comfortable with. If you would like something from a musical- stick to the classics. Look at The Sound of Music, King and I, or Oklahoma. These are available on DVD to help with learning the melodies. She does not have to sing the whole song. Usually, your best 16 or 32 measures of music will do. That amounts to one verse and a chorus. What matters the most is she is comfortable with the song. This requires some extra time memorizing, and getting comfortable performing the piece in front of people. And, tell her to remember to smile! Break a leg...

There are tons of good songs to sing. If she likes a song with emotion then it's easy. Every musical has a good song with a song from the heart. I might suggest, Tomorrow from 'Annie' or 'Edielweis' (I'm sorry I don't know how to spell that) from 'The Sound of Music' You can go to www.amazon.com and find tons of musical C.Ds and veiw the samples. Find one she likes and get the lyrics. I hope I helped!

It depends. Is she doing it Accapella? What is her range? Has she had any vocal training? I would find a fairly simple song, and one she already knows, that is, if she doesn't have much time to prepare. I would suggest avoiding a composer named Stephen Sondheim, his works are generally harder than most. I would also avoid music from "Phantom of the Opera" and "Les Miserables" both are rather hard. You may want to look at old standards also. "When I Fall in Love" would be a pretty good one I think. It's not too hard and it's rather short.

For play try-outs at my school, people sang various songs, many from musicals. 'Memory' from Cats was popular, as was 'Tell Me It's Not True' from Blood Brothers. But it all depends on your friend's voice, really - soprano, alto? etc. But further to earlier answers, 'Only Hope' by Mandy Moore would be a good one too. Hope this helps!

I'd go with something from Wicked myself.
Me, I'm singing Popular from Wicked for our play tryouts, but a good song if you've got a good middleish voice would also be Defying Gravity from Wicked.
Some stuff from High School Musical wouldn't be too bad, either.
Or if you want something really simple, Hair from Hair. :P I love hippies.
