How do we differentiate between different genres of music?

A music genre is a category of pieces of music that share a certain style or "basic musical language". Music may also be categorized by non-musical criteria such as geographical origin, though a single geographical category will normally include a wide variety of sub-genres. A music genre or subgenre could be defined by the techniques, the styles, the context and the themes (content, spirit).

The instruments used, how the instruments are used and the sounds manipulated as well as how the song is sang- if there are any words at all. The tempo and tone of the music also adds into genres.

An easy example would be Punk which is usually pretty fast rock music with plenty of guitars and such versus Pop-Punk which is lighter on the guitars and lyrics.

If it has a reliable meoldy that would have good team spirit with the suited pace, it somewhat is music, yet, pop, rock, steel & hip-hop do no longer fall into any form different than " noise to a deafening beat " !!

most people just guess. but then that leads to people being way off. so dont go by what the internet says because its usually off. people ususally look at what instruments are being played and how then are being played and the vocals and lyrics.
