I put a book into a box that is a lot larger than it is, should i change what its in? I think my sister-in-law will be very surprised of whats inside. Do other people do this to surprise people of whats inside?

I often put gifts in boxes bigger than the gift itself. i do this for a couple of reasons: 1- to disguise the shape of the gift and 2- to keep them guessing. Most people seem to think that the bigger the gift, the more they are liked or some weird association like that. I give gifts that mean something to me and I hope will mean something to the person I am giving to, so, the size of the package doesn't matter at all. I think, if your sister-in-law likes reading then she will love the contents and not be worried at all by the size of the box it comes in.

I like this sort of ideal cause it gives the receiver a big surprise when they open it and see it is not what they expected or thought it could be. Now some people put rocks or shell in the box to weight it like some big gift. The gift can be worth much in a big box of course.

I think that is a very good idea, part of the fun of Christmas is the surprise factor in giving gifts so no you should not change a single thing.

Well if you put it into a big box so others will think you went all out with a big expensive gift, that's pretty sad. If you put it in a big box to trick your sister into thinking she's NOT getting a book, then it's all fun and good. Just make sure it's not shakeable - that will give away your trick.

If the item is a good one then it's ok. If you put a crap gift in a bigger box that makes it look like it's a lot better of a present then yes its wrong.

lol! you should 'nest' a few boxes, since it's such a special gift. Nesting is taking a smaller box, wrapping it, putting it in a bigger box, wrapping it, and so on and so forth. I wouldn't do more than 3 boxes because it can get obnoxious after the 3rd box.

Have fun and Merry Christmas!

I personally think it is a good idea. I always try to disguise my gifts when wrapping. Things like CD's and books are usually pretty obvious if you wrap them as-is, so I'll put them in a somewhat bigger box. Jewelry is also fun to put in a huge box.

No, It is not wrong. It is actually misleading and exciting as well. Just make sure to stuff the box so that the book does not move around...It will be hard for her to guess what is inside.

Well, if you want to be absolutely strict about it, it can be seen to be misleading.

As for your situation, it depends on how you believe your sister will react. Will she be pleased with the "mystery" of opening the present? Will she be happy with whatever you give her or does she prefer certain types of gifts?

I got a present like that once. It was a box 2' by 2' and I thought it was something huge! It turned out to be a plastic bracelet. I appreciated the thought-it's the thought that counts-and got on with my life. If you really think it's a good idea-go ahead. I would do it!
