my brother says my water pump is going out, my husband said something about timing pulley or external bearings. My question is, what are some symptoms of each thing so I can try to decide on my own?

it is a 98 dodge neon

i'm going to probably replace the water pump, the timing belt, and the pulley, since he's going to be in there, it is not really a scraping sound, it is a rattling noise, no coolant is disappearing or oil leaks, I have 115k miles, both my hubby and my bro have worked as mechanics in the past, I'm just nervous because they had a discrepency in their diagnosis, I hope it is not something else. That's why I'm looking for any symptoms related to those problems. Thanks everyone:)

There are several things that can cause noise from the front of the engine.
1 Water pump
2 Pulleys
3 Loose bolts that hold the pulleys in place
4 Belt tentioner
5 Alternator
Ask a pro for some help, most mechanics with experience can tell right away what it is. Good Luck and GOD Bless.

could be anything. when in doubt take it to a mechanic you can trust and have him or her tell you whats the problem is.

I would think its the tensioner pulley on your surpentine belt. but not being able to see the car I cant be for sure. beings its a 98 I would replace the belt and the pulley as I am sure you have alot of miles on it.

the mileage will will help determine, also leaking antifreeze. dodge V 6 motors it is going to be your water pump. you will have to take your timing belt off to change it, so replace it also, and check your pulleys to make sure the job is done right.

Possibly a loose timing cover or timing chain/belt getting ready to go out. Chain/belt is supposed to be replaced every 75,000 miles.

stupid dodges! If its the water pump, eventualy coolant is gonna dissapear. If its the cam shaft bearings, eventualy oil is gonna leak all over the place... My bet is the water pump. Is it more of a scraping noise?
