A hippie is whatever you would like to define as a group like punks or gangsters or preps, etc. Hippies orinially came about during the 60s, and are generally stereotyped to have long hair, wear loose clothing, eat organic stuff only, play guitar, etc. Wikipedia will have a lot more information.
You can become a hippie just by doing whaever hippies generally do. (You could even just dress like a hippie and believe strongly in world peace, or you might not have to do even that. There's not much too it, really.)

I was a hippy for many years in the 60's and 70's. Primarily a hippy rejects society, money, the society of the past and persues a hedonistic life style. The hippy movement advocated love, rock and roll, sex, spirituality and lots of psychedelic drugs. It was a Utopian movement. Unfortunately human behavior makes this dream impossible. I think the psychedelic drugs was great but was delusional. Had a good time though.
I think you friend is just looking for some way to express his rebellion and individuality. Might be an excuse to smoke weed and take drugs too.We call these people hippy wannabees. No such movement exists today.

Your guy friend must be awfully old, girl. The real hippies came into being around about 1965 in the United States and in many parts of Europe. Generally, they were middle-class kids who dropped out of the world of their parents' values and attempted to live freer, less-dependent on the normal, everyday, lives. There were attempts at communal living, a lot of indiscriminate sex and drug use, some very relaxed and creative clothes and careers, some not-bad music, an impressive amount of social and political activism, new styles of thought and artwork, and a lot of people who went nuts, had violent ends, caught some pretty ghastly diseases, and ended up living on the street for the remainder of their lives. When it comes down to it, the hippies had some good ideas, but a lot of their culture still depended on the culture they were rejecting. Hippiedom "officially" came to an end in San Francisco, circa 1969-1970, when the Haight-Ashbury community pronounced the "death of hippe" and held a mock burial in the park.
There have been lots of people who like and admire what they think they know about hippies, and call themselves hippies, but they really don't know, and they aren't.

Well REAL hippies were from the late 60's & early 70's!!! and they were into druds, sex and rock & roll!!! Woodstock if I'm not mistaken was around 1968 - 1969 and they had it in Woodstock, NY, and it was for a protest against Vietnam. To me their will never be another Woodstock!!! Woddstock during that era had a purpose!!! I know that they had different woodstocks in the past....hoping for what to acomplish I have noclue, but it's not "WOODSTOCK"!!! A hippie is more free spirited and NOT into violence. I left you a website that can show you what hippies looked like back in the day. I would study the lifestyle of the hippy to see if it matches in a general sense.

Check out the research answer. This is very complex, I speak from experience. Anyone can become a Hippie since it is a mind set and lifestyle that can be embraced by old and young alike. I have been called an "old hippie". I consider it a compliment!!
