Boy advertisers are smart, and we are so gullible. Teens have to have an IPOD, a better quality MP3 player won't do. We believe Nikes are better, because they have the money to have overpaid athletes tell us so. When are we going to use our own heads and stop following what the advertisers want us to do?

Oh girl...it's not just kids! I spent like...$40 on a turkey at Thanksgiving because my husband just KNEW a Butterball was better than some off-brand turkey. I let him buy it without complaining because heck...it made him happy, but he doesn't know that every year, I buy like.... 'Bob's turkey' and it tastes just as good as a name brand, lol! It's all in how you prepare it. A turkey is a turkey.

As far as things like IPODS go...I'm betting those teenagers will start looking for off-brand items when they're older, and have other bills to pay that take presidence. The off brand things don't look nearly as bad then! LOL!

People are so brain washed with name brand names, because no one has taken the time to teach them any better. It all starts at home. Most parents get kicks off on trying to out do their friends and their friends kids. You have to teach people to teach their kids that everything that cost the most is not always the best.

Companies are smart with advertising, and they know where to corner human nature. Not all advertising appeals to everyone, but for those who don't know how advertising works, it gets them to want whatever the product is. It's actually funny; the more you learn how advertising works, the less you buy it (pun not intended) so when everone learns about its tricks, we will stop following what advertisers want us to do.

Not all (as in WE in your Q) We are the smarter ones which the advertisers can't always target. Looks like they usually target the more gullible teens, and why not - if these teens have over-indulgent parents.

Welcome to the magic of marketing! You're are absolutely correct; advertisers are smart and consumers are gullible. The only way to avoid the marketing trap is to be informed in your purchases. Obviously, "Nike" and "IPOD" are brand names. People need to shop beyond brand names.

I agree, it's all a money game and people/kids and parents are all being brain washed. Not me. I had a friend that didn't have much money for food, so she would say, but would continuously buy expensive name brand clothes for her son so he would fit in at his school. She told me it made her feel like a "fit in" mother Unbelievable.

I have learned about this before.
well like in the back of our minds
we remember advertisments
they get to us in a weird
sorta way. so we remember a
catchy saying or brand name
and dont remember how
so when the time comes
you see that name and
say HEY LETS GO THERE
or SHOP THERE or EAT THERE

in todays world we are so caught up with fashion, having to look cool. and looking cool is having the name brand things. if you dont have then its like your not the business. then women or young girls look for a man to wear or have up-to-date stuff cause that makes them more attractive,it makes them look like they have a little money. and thats always a plus even when most of the time their broke, spent their last dollar or someone elses dollar on some name brand.

Not everyone mindlessly accepts what commercials, ads and big companies tell them. Unfortunately, however, it seems that many (or at least a visible minority) do. Good for you, you've finally caught on. Keep spreading the word. ;)

Its all mental and biological,,,we associate buying a brand name to being proud, or feeling good...we can only feel good when pheromones or serotonin (hormones released when we play sports or have sex) are released. when we go overboard with shopping there is a chemical imbalnce. hence we become addicted to something a usual as shopping for brand names

its also sociological..we feel a part of a group
