There are a few factors to this question I must consider:
1) My salary and disposable income
2) Not taking into account the place/hometown I may have grown up in
3) Family or Single? I'm currently single.
4) Your preferences on weather.
A great state for a single-person with a big salary:
California
A great state for a family-oriented individual:
Any - so long as you're making a decent, standard living
A great state for someone who enjoys a state with mountains, dry lands, recreation, big cities, oceans:
Washington State or Oregon
A great state for someone that wants warm weather consistently year-round, minimal rain:
Arizona, Hawaii, southern Texas
A great state with a big city feel and night life
New York (NYC)
Reasonable cost of living states with nice areas:
Tennessee, Kentucky, Texas, Louisiana
I've pretty much traveled to almost every state, and still have lived in Washington State for quite some time. I'm a recreation nut, so this place is somewhat ideal for me. It does rain a lot during the winter months, but overall, we have some of the best weather year round (generally not to hot, not too cold during the day. Next to Alaska, this is probably the best state to be in during the summer (average temperature: 75 and sunny; perhaps 3 days of rain out of three summer months).

Probably on the central coast of California, about an hour or so north of Los Angeles. I love the lifestyle out there. I'm from Alabama so the difference is phenomenal. A couple of other places I'd consider would be the southern tip of Florida, just a little north of Miami, or possibly Hawaii (which I'm hoping to visit in the coming year).

Right where I'm at. In the upper peninsula of Michigan because we don't have hurricanes, poisionous snakes, tarantula's, alligators, crocidiles, scorpions, earthquakes or tsaumi's. We have all four season's and the winter's have been mild the past few years. It's a pretty good place to live.

Michigan has everything...beaches, small mountains, great rockin' cities, quaint villages, beautiful forests, majestic dunes, a lot of cultural interests, great universities! That's where I live, and it's hard to beat.
