A novel is a relatively long, fictional prose narrative with a more or less complex plot or pattern of events about human beings, their thoughts, etc. Novels are often published in book form.

A book is writing on paper between protective covers, distinguished by length from a magazine, tract, etc. It may be either literary or scientific in nature.

Thus a novel is a type of literature, but a book is not.

A book is anything that contains pages, with words in it. Anything from the dictionary to the bible is a book. A novel is usually a fictional story and usually has less than 100 pages in it. Many children's books are novels.

Here is the Wikipedia definition for the word "novel":

"A novel is an extended work of written, narrative, prose fiction, usually in story form; the writer of a novel is a novelist. The English word "novel" derives from the Italian word novella, meaning "a tale, a piece of news." The novel is longer (at least 40,000 words) and more complex than either the short story or the novella, and is not bound by the structural and metrical restrictions of plays or poetry"
