My friend, Georgia, had a book called 100 Great Ideas That Changed the World (or something like that). One of the essays was about cannibalism. It talked about how traces of cannibalism have been found in all cultures. However, mammals are not naturally cannibals - that is, they don't instinctively eat their own kind. So the point of the essay was that signs of cannibalism were signs that people were beginning to think about things. Generally, cultural cannibalism (as to opposed to crazies or situations like the Donners) doesn't have to do with being hungry. It has to do with religious ideas. We are not cannibals naturally. We had to think about it. (and please don't think I'm endorsing it - this was just an interesting essay.) Another interesting fact is about the Donner party. The survivors were surrounded with meat - however, when they finally decided to eat their fellows they ate the very smallest amount possible to keep themselves alive. Back to that idea that it's just not natural for mammals. Vardis Fisher (who wrote Mountain Man, which was made into the movie Jeremiah Johnson) wrote an interesting book about the Donners called The Mothers.
There were still some tribes in (i believe) Papa New Giuiene that practised cannablism into modern times. However, they stopped because it was causing liesons on their brains that were killing them. I don't think it's an African thing at all.

If you mean 'cannibal' and 'myth'...
Yes, they're real. In the 17th century, a family lived in an underground cave. They survived by trapping innocent travelers, robbing them, and then eating them. About 30 years after they started this, law enforcement found the cave, filled with salted human remains.
There were some Native American tribes that were cannabalistic, and I'm pretty sure there are some religions and/or groups that still believe that cannabalism is fine.
If you've ever been to the Ripleys! Believe it or Not museum, they have an entire room filled with information about cannibals. The Donnor party, stranded in the mountains with no food, ate their dead friends and family members to survive. There are certain types of knives cannibals use to decapitate people, etc. There aren't many cannibals left in the world, there are a few poor African tribes that resort to cannibalism in times of need, I believe. And don't worry, unless you TRY to look for cannibals, you won't ever meet one.
