Go see a Gynecologist.
If you want lite periods, she will put you on a low dose version of the Pill. There are so many new variations out there, I'm not a medical professional, but it will reduce all problems.
Another good remedy is Evening Primrose Oil.
Dong quai
Red Rasperry Leaf Tea

Also important to honor your body.
Don't hate or view this with disgust.
Your blood is part of your creative powers that make you unique and a woman. This should be a celebration.
Read the book, the Red Tent, I was really inspired about the shared rituals women used to support each other during this important time.
Do less, make sure you are eating some red meat, and an iron supplement with the blood loss.
Rest, put your feet up. Plan on taking some time out of your regular schedule. Go to be early. Use a heating pad. Light some candles. Rent some movies. Make this time in your life really fun.
I'm sorry there is no strong wise woman in your life that can guide and assist you in this very important time.

With regards to managing the blood flow - you are going to need to buy Overnight (orange stripe) Ultra thin Almay pads with wings. If money is tight, buy what you can.
Also consider learning how to use a tampon, if you don't know how to. I recommend the organic cotton, but use the plastic applicator for more comfort, and get some super plus and make sure you change them at least 2-3x a day.
In a real pinch, disposable underwear will work. As embarrasing as this may sound, wear baggy, DARK colored pants, and buy x-small disposable underwear for incontenance. Keep a pair with you in a pretty cosmetics bag. Until you figure out your cycle and how to time your trips to the bathroom, and get all the products you need to manage your flow.

For bed time, you can always sleep on a dark colored towel.

Best to you,

Aww hunni. It is perfectly normal to have heavy periods when you first start your period. Many girls suggested sleeping with a towl underneath you, it is a good suggestion. Also, buy overnight pads. They are very long and helpful.

Also, that ball of blood is a clot. Nothing too bad to worry about, it happens all the time.

It will take time for your period to thin out, and even then it may not. If in a couple years it is still bothersome, and a deep concern, then and only then bring up birth control, but don't resort into it right away!! I hate how it is such a common solution. It is not always needed.

Some women just bleed heavier than others, I should know because I had heavy and painful periods, but just to be on the safe side, I recommend going to the gynecologist to make sure everything is OK, and they might put you on birth control pills to regulate your periods. Use pads too because unless you've had sex before, (I hope you've haven't since you're only 13), tampons will be extremely uncomfortable.

It's totally normal to have a heavy period the first couple of times after you first started. Just bring some pads with you to school and go to the bathroom every so often to make sure it's not going to bleed through. It should lighten up soon.

when i first got my period, it was really heavy like yours and very painful. i had to sleep with a towel on my sheets beacuase i *would* bleed through, and it was before they had the longer overnight pads. i'd have to change my feminie product like every two hours or i'd have a mess. honestly, the only thing that slowed it was going on the pill. there's no other way that i know of to regulate it. if you think your parents would freak about you going on the pill, they have really low dose prescriptions that are meant specifically to help with heavy periods and not necessarily for birth control.

heavy, irregular periods are normal when you are young. Go to the drug store and get the large overnight pads and tampons. The box will have instructions on how to use them, they will help you to not bleed all over the sheets. I used to have to sleep with a towle under me to keep my bed safe. If you continue with havy periods every month you may want to get on birth control. It can help regulate you periods and make them lighter.

Ah darling, it takes time for your body to sort it all out...

even in my 30's and 40's I had heavy periods....but for me it was "normal"...since you are just beginning it's freaking you out...

so ... take a deep breath..and wear the thickest pad you can find...and also realize there is some connection between heavy periods and getting pregnant easily..

When you are ready for children, they will be the silver lining to your dark cloud!!!!!!

. You may be passing a small clot My Dr explained it like this
Think of a huge chunk of Ice and its got to go though the size of a straw so it stretches it out of shape so thats why you have pain.
Take a nice warm bath do heating pads and if you can take midol it helps you may want to sleep on a towel This is normal in the begining a lot .Washing real good in a bath tub help to just before bed.
