I totally agree--the media really stereotypes gays. I'm lesbian, and I hate it that we always come across as either 1) sluts or 2) butches in movies, because I'm neither! The gay guys I've met are pretty much like just guys in general--some are more effeminate than others. I meet some guys that come across as stereotypically "gay" but are straight, and vice versa. I think people should just be themselves--then maybe the media will start to change. If we all conform to the movies and t.v. images, then we'll just be encouraging those false stereotypes.
Historically, someone's sexual status was determined differentally than it is now. One person (usually the woman) was considered the weaker, sexual receptor, and the other person (usually the man), was considered the stronger, sexual dominator because the man was the one who penetrated the woman. For instance, in Greece when two men slept together, the man who penetrated was considered more masculine than the man who received his partner's penetration. Obviously, beliefs and values have changed now. But I wonder if the stereotype that gay guys are effeminate came from those ancient views that connected being gay with anal sex and thus with the necessity that one of the men become weaker and therefore (according to their concept of women) like women.
Just stick to being yourself. :)

In movies and shows it is easier for the writers, directors, and actors to have a character play to a stereotype to make him/her believable to the general audience than take the time in words and actions to make the same character appear to be gay. In movies and shows geared towards a gay audience, these stereotypes are usually absent since they are not needed to make a character appear to be gay since we are already aware that the stereotypes are usually not accurate.

Unfortunately most movies will only center on the stereotypical gay guys. Not on regular gay guys who do not act flamboyant

i totally agree there are far more of us who do not fit that profile . and besides thats a sterotype from the 60's and 70's. personally i cant stand guys who act that way. its a real turnoff. i will take the guy working 9-5 with a grade 9 education who can cook and pay his bills and leave the boundaries of the innner city without being scared. hehehehe

Irritates the hell out of me.
But, Hollywood is infamous for stereotypes. When they can't come up with something original, they whip out the 2 dimensional characters.
The wise cracking diner waitress
The tall, muscular hero with a square jaw
The helpless woman victim
The pakistani cab driver
The corrupt businessman
Ugly equals villian
The rebellious teen
The bumbling father
The stressed out mother
etc

The truth that most gay men don't wear dresses and love to shop would terrify the right wing whack jobs in this country.

There is always a kernel of truth in every stereotype. There are gay guys and bi guys who fit that image. Just keep doing you.

On TV and movies they like to show extremes, they do it to black people too. They won't get as many viewers if they show people acting normal and with some sense.
