The strength of the interest, want vs need.

Personally, I think there's not much difference. A lifelong hobby could be seen as an obsession. Obsessions fade just as hobbies may also. One may label a negative hobby as an obsession. One may label a positive obsession as a hobby.

In psychological term, obsession is like an uncontrollable intrusive thought or belief about something, which is often irrational. It might or might not be followed by compulsive acts, for example, washing hands repeatedly like hundred times a day (then it's called OCD). The obsession behind this might be (excessive and irrational) fear of dirt or germs. Sometimes they know that their fear is irrational but they just can't stop the thought. Hobby/interest is something more 'normal', anyone can have it, they enjoy it and they can have control over it.

a hobby occupies your free time, while an obsession interferes with your non free time. Also you can stop a hobby whenever you want to willingly and don't go missing activities because of it, an obsession robs you of your time to do other things.

Obsessions interfere with your everyday life. Interests do not. This is a bit of an oversimplification though.

Obsession will turn into OCD, Obession Complusive Disorder
Hobby will not.

If you have Obession over sometime, more than losing your free time, you will lose track or control of other things.

Hobby is something you can control from your time.
