Commitments and responsibilities, for most of us. With the situation you mentioned - with nothing - there will be many other things that will keep one alive. It can be of an advantageous position, and to be able to do much more. Without any commitments for self, perhaps to make life much better for others in any way you can.

I hardly have any friends, and my family is not a very positive part of my life. And I don't really believe in God. Sometimes it's really tough to keep going, honestly, especially during this time of year when it seems like everyone else is enjoying their family and friends. The hardest thing is being lonely.
What keeps me going? Afraid of what death would be like, sometimes. Usually, it's hope that I can shape my life to become better by building my own family and circle of friends. My goals and dreams also keep me going: I'm pre-med, and I am very passionate about becoming a doctor. I also love my little brother and sister very much--they are much younger than I am, and I know that my death would hurt them very much.

Physically you are alive through the work and cooperation of the different organs in your body.
Saying you're alive emotionally depends on your personality and how have you felt, interpret, and treated events that have unfold throughout your life. A person may feel his life no longer worth living because of the death of his dog or a psychopathic person may feel satisfaction and happiness through killing of people and even his family. So it truly depends on the person on what things, events, or people keeps him/her alive and what things keeps him otherwise.

Guess you have a problem. That is your choice.
I have no choice about life. To be born, to live and to die was not chosen by me. So I might as well sit back and enjoy the trip.
It isn't always pleasant, but then again I might miss something.
What happens between birth and death is all choices made by you.
