Generally speaking, ASUS makes the best motherboards. However, it's been a LONG time since a brand name has been a major priority in shopping for a motherboard.

First matter is to select which processor it should support. Myself, I strongly recommend AMDs over Intels. And while you may not want to invest in a multi-core processor staring out, you should really look for a board capable of supporting the strongest CPU in whichever family you decide upon.

Next consideration is built-in features and available slots. PCI-Express has eclipsed AGP for video support (and on-board video generally sucks anyways), so plan on getting a PCIx video card with at least 256MB. I'm a diehard supporter of ATI, but nVidia seems to have an edge in support and compatibility.

Also be sure that it has enough slots for whatever cards you might plan on using with one or two left over for future expansion. You should also make sure that is has an onboard-LAN capable of 1-GHz.

Many motherboards only have 2 slots for memory, but I really recommend finding a model with four slots (only use one or two for your initial RAM purchase). If at all possible, use 1-Gig sticks to better accomodate future expansion.

I won't specifically recommend a particular motherboard as I don't know well enough exactly what your plans are for the system, but these guidelines should help you get pretty close to your 'ideal'.

The first question you need to answer is what type of CPU would you prefer: Intel or AMD based.
Motherboards will either support one or the other type but not both. There are little differences in the processor choice other than some people swear by AMD X2 Dual-Core for example while others love the new Intel Core Duo's.
Once you know that, you can go about the business of researching motherboards. From my experience, Asus, Gigabyte and MSI rate highly.

The only word in main boards-ASUS!! Second choice, Gigabyte. You must decide how are you planning to use this computer? That will help you decide on which processor to get. Into games? AMD superior. Word processing, general computing, Intel is excellent. In each case dual-core is even more better. Check the deals on newegg.com and on tigerdirect.com. The motherboard, processor, memory, and video card are the four most expensive things you have to buy for your basic computer builds.
