yahoo and hotmail have always been free and have forced all the others to offer free mail as they have beat them without having to charge. Those that charge, can't get it right in the long run as they get greedy and lose their way.

My personal recommendation is Gmail offered by Google. It is by far the largest mailbox offered by any free mail service (I'm currently up to over 3 gigs) and has (in my experience) the toughest spam filters.
