Catholicism and her idea of vampirism are pretty similar;

-Both rise from the dead
-Both drink blood (Catholics only metaphorically)
-Both have a certain classic elegance to them
-Both gain strength from their condition (ie: Christian martyrs standing up to the lions in Rome)

Both Catholicism and the vampire mythos have been changed and retold countless times so there are bound to be some similiarities in the many different versions. Anne Rice probably imagined her vampires to fit in with her classic Catholic upbrining. That is why many vampires in her books have martyr complexes.

That depends upon the presumption that she is good at relating the two.

To what extent do vampirism and catholicism can be related is questionable at best, considering the various doctrines each has about the other. And since no verified vampire has been known to exist, it is difficult to imagine how 'realistically' it is being portrayed.

My guess is that since vampirism has no experts, each person is allowed to come along and make it seem 'logical' according to one's own belief system. Because Anne Rice is so steeped in catholicism, her characters take on the author's prejudices even when they don't partake of the same background.

She's good because she took the blank that is 'vampirism' and made it fit catholic doctrine.
