ive downloaded Super Mario via the Virtual Console on my Wii.
it requests a classic controller. I am using a Gamecube controller, because I read it was compatible.
However it doesnt seem to work no matter what button i press.
Any ideas?

I've tried it, and it does work. However, I had issues getting to the pause menu to save a game. You're better off buying the classic controller for $20.
Keep in mind that the Gamecube controllers were not meant for Nintendo 64 games, but the Classic controller was made with these in mind.
