if they are athiests or non-christian, it means little. they should have to swear on the constitution. their job is to protect that, not the bible.

not true! back east (i live in oregon) some represenative or senator just did is thing but had the koran inplace of the bible. this was a week or so i believe

That is the best question Ive read on here so far! Thats so true like in court why do you have to swear on a bible? I mean if you are an athiest then it dont matter much then right? Im giving you a thumbs up vote.

The swearing in on a bible thing is a ceremonal thing. To take office, they do not have to swear on any book at all. In fact, they don't even have to swear. They can affirm if they like.

There are lots of things like that. Like if a judge asks you if you will tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth so help you God you can ask him or her to rephrase the question without a reference to a diety.

Its one of the lesser known but great things about our system. There is no religious test for office or... much of anything public.

It's called the "swearing in" and it is because this country was founded on christian principles.
Read the bible, You'll learn alot about what this countries principles and morals are based on and why despite the moral decay it is still the greatest country in the world.
In fact read a little bit about history and who wrote and how the constitution was wrote.you'll realize thatOur founding fathers were God fearing men .

they don't have to. know your junk before you spill it. Maybe ask, Do gov't officials need to swear on a bible? In court, you don't have to either. People, get an education.

250 million or so of the 300 million people in America are Christian, that's why. Plus, it is a tradition....
