My son-in-law just got his notebook computer back from a repair shop.

He ran it for awhile and when he was done, put in computer in Hibernation.

His computer is running XP.

Now, for some unknown reason, his computer is locked in Hibernation. He cannot get it out.

When he powers up, the fan turns on for a moment, then turns off and that's all that happens. He can't get into BIOS, Safe Mode or anything.

This has been extremely frustrating.

Any suggestions at all would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Hold the power button in for 10 seconds until the notebook shuts off.

XP and Hibernation is irrelevent to the problem.

I'll explain why. The laptop powers off after a few seconds, you said you saw no BIOS, safe mode, etc (which implies you are seeing no display).

That means the OS (operating system) never comes into the equation. Certainly not Hibernation (an OS specific feature, during which you can simply tap F8 to abort the resume of Hibernation data).

Basically, your question is "My Laptop turns on for a few seconds, then turns off. Why?"

First and foremost, if he just got it back from a repair shop, I would recommend stalking right back into that same repair shop, saying a politically correct version of "what the **** man?"

That's the best course for you to take. I can suggest things that may be wrong, things you can check, but honestly if you just got it back from a repair shop (and them having said it was repaired) they ****** up.

Based on your description, again, assuming there is no BIOS screen -- turn on, turn off -- they ****** up.

If you would like me to edit this answer with possibilies of what the problem might be, I can, but they will be low level. Not something that has ANYTHING to do with the operating system or even the hard drive with that operating system on it.

Based on your description, you could remove the hard drive from your laptop and toss it out the window and it would have the exact same behavior. And WindowsXP (and hibernation feature) is on that hard drive. That just went out a (real life)window -- boom it's on the street now - but the laptop would exhibit the same behavior, as what you described the laptop never reaches the point of even caring - or looking - at what hard drive may or may not be plugged into it.

Ugly mugly. If the button for 10 seconds trick doesn't work, I just yank the power cord, then the battery. I then pretend that I'm going to get my old Amiga and Atari 800 out of the closet. I then re-insert the battery and pray, all the while casting my eye at the closet.

It's always worked. Superstition and fear are programmed into Micro-soft operating systems.

Just like the Hal 9000.

Good luck!
