To begin with, Merlin was a title, not a name. The Merlin was one of the head Druids of southern England, if not the head one. The Druidic order was responsible for placing leaders on the throne, and orchestrated Arthurs' rise to power. Over the course of his lifetime/reign there were probably several "Merlins" - thus giving rise to the legend about an immortal wizard.
Now this is not to say there haven't been wizards - for example, Pharoahs' "counsellors" during the time of Moses, Simon Magus during the Roman Empire, and the sixteenth century monk Thomas Bacon.
Your question would be better put to ask "What has happened to magic?" Well, several of the ancient "books" such as the Key of Solomon and the Picatrix have been totally eradicated, and the old knowledges have either died with their owners, been improperly remembered/altered into legends and fairy tales, forgotten, or let go as mankind embraced Technology after the Renaissance. You could show this as a wavelength, with magical proliferation at the bottom, or valley of the wave, and scientific education at the top, or peak of the wave. We have been riding the peak since the Age of Enlightenment, and we know that a wavelength is governed by natural physics and will correct itself if thrown out of phase. We are long overdue for the wavemedian to descend into the valley. In other words, the old "wizards" may be long dead, but Magic itself is what will be resurrected. There is no need to look for the return of old legends - we ourselves will be the Heroes of a New Age, and it, inevitably, is coming.

Legend has it, Merlin was encased and locked up into a tower and bonded by the passion and lust he had for a female apprentice or devotee that learned all his magic and thus betrayed him. I wouldn't say wizards don't exist; as there are plenty practicing wiccans and occultists who would be fond of the title 'wizard.'

Some of these said "wizards" were not wizards at all but true-to-life beings, and among these were a few great ones, of which Merlin was one, for Merlin, more essentially, was one of the great spiritual masters of that time. The wizard, say, is labeled such for want of a better word, and in our modern Western places and time, no better word exists nor does any true conception of what the ‘true’ wizard was and therefore is. As with that of anyone or anything we do not know, we distort the true import or even pervert such entirely. And of course, this resolve only divides the Heart from the Mind and thereby conquers the Self – the complete person. You see?

But by that habit to distort or corrupt, a dimmest of light is cast and, when multiplied many times, the result can conquer the society to which an individual belongs, for the higher thoughts are thereby corrupted, and down we would go into the history books, and comes now the lore and legacy not at all functioning in any the slightest of the original form as it once expressed during its existence.

But let me give an aside here... This happens and will continue so, for even in Nature, there are “Checks and Balances.” Truths will always be checked by lies. And lies will always run the gauntlet of truths. Merlin’s story was subject to this same principle, and quite frankly, virtually all of the true knowledge he possessed could not be allowed to be known: Merlin did know this, and shared his only with precious few who earned and possessed the merit and inner balance and spiritual maturity to contain the knowledge. Otherwise to unleash it would cause certain harm. Merlin’s purpose was to import love to whatever he did, not power—the mark of the true wizard, see? He was real indeed.

As in the case of wizards, the same result can be said of those who are the Shamans as well. Ignorance once labeled these men and women of knowledge as “witch doctors,” but they are truly individuals who possess tremendous knowledge and insight and abilities. Many Native peoples the world over still know them as Medicine Men, or ‘Women, or any number of good titles that befit their statures in their particular cultures.

As to the detractors or near-sighted historians, the best we might say of them is theirs is examples of unawareness at best or ignorance at worst.

But this again is the way of the universe, which is to say, a realm of duality, and which requires of a balancing of things in order to exists and serve the purpose for which it is designed.

While many of these beings, for example, are wizards who work with the forces of Nature, still others are working in the realm of Arts or Healing; in fact, working in as many differing areas of life just as does anyone in the modern or known world do.

But chief among these all is, they impart vision and imagination as well as light and sound to life and living.

And wizards never existed. Magical people existed (and still do exist - go visit your local covent)....but not wizards. Wizards are made-up characters that sci-fi nerds use in their little Warcraft games to make themselves feel more powerful than they can ever be.
