It almost always occurs when I press the clutch down but also occurs out of the blue when I am driving along a straight road at a constant speed not even touching the clutch. What could be wrong? I thought at first it was something to do with the clutch, but the fact that the noise sometimes happens when I am not touching the clutch confuses me. The noise is definately a lot worse every time I do press the clutch though

Could be clutch release bearing, unless you have a Golf or something with a golf type gearbox you might just as well fit a new clutch while you are at it , The VW Golf gearbox also used on 1300 and 1600 Rover Montego and Maestro has a release bearing on the end cover which can be changed without removng the gearbox.

probabaly needs a clutch. the throwout bearing is probably bad and causing chatter "sometimes"., the clutch disc itself is probably worn down so far that the rivets are grinding against the pressureplate.

You can have a garage or someone that has a clue about clutches, to take a look at it. I'm pretty sure it will be toast.

If you need anything else, just let me know. you can shoot me an email at wgarrison@logixautoparts.com

When you disengage the clutch the fly wheel spins and if its dirty or consumed will make a noise. Usually the pressure plate can also have the same sound when travelling it makes a noise if its starts to slip. I would say its definitely the clutch. Bloody cars hey?

IT SOUNDS LIKE THE THRUST BEARING. YOU SHOULD BUY A 3 IN 1 CLUTCH KIT WHICH INCLUDES PRESSURE PLATE, DRIVE PLATE AND THRUST BEARING. AS YOU HAVE TO REMOVE THE GEARBOX TO REPLACE THE BEARING YOU MAY AS WELL REPLACE THE CLUTCH AT THE SAME TIME. BUY THE CLUTCH KIT OFF EBAY AND YOU WILL MORE THAN LIKELY SAVE HALF THE PRICE OF HAVING IT FITTED. TRY A SMALL GARAGE FOR A QUOTE, YOU MAY BE SURPRISED.

My only hope is that you haven't let this go on too long. It's definitely the clutch or throw out bearing.
Please don't let it suffer any longer, get to a tranny shop today.
