David was the little guy that killed the giant Goliath, right? So it's self-evident. Apple is the giant company, if some little company messes them up then they're the David.

in the famous story from the bible , GOLIATH was a giant ,very powerful PHILISTINE , he did a lot of damage to the poor hebrews.
then david , who according to the story was still a little boy, came up and killed him with a STONE .

so the story is used figuratively whenevr you have a powerful person or entity that is confronted with possible destruction from an insignificant , least likely person or event .

for example :

the in-trading scandal turned out to be the DAVID for the EXXON Goliath .

are the IRAQI insurgents to become the DAVID of the USA armie's Goliath ?

the sight of the scrawny , underweight boxer from Somalia beat down the 6 foot champion reminded me of the legendary battle between David and Goliath .

the idea is
1. you find a situation where a small , unlikely thing SURPRISINGLY overcomes something GREAT .

2. you compare the small thing to David

3. you compare the GREAT thing to Goliath .

4.congratulations!
you create the impression of being a well-read, well-spoken person .

just like everyone else explained, David beat the giant Goliath. So whatever strong tactic or product(David) apple has, it's basically their savior to the competition(Goliath)

it's like the underdog going against the one who's favored to win. david was a guy who went up against a giant named goliath and won.
