A generation is defined as the average time from the birth of the parents to the birth of their children. So, what is the average at which people have children? That would be a generation. It changes over time, and today would also be different in different parts of the world.
Sometimes a generation has been defined as the average life span of a person, and periods as long as 100 years have been described as a generation.
Here are a couple of links that discuss the term generation.

A generation is the adverage life span of the people during that life time. I'm not sure, but I think it was 60, it could be higher now due to people living longer.

It's not exactly defined in years. What a generation generally means is people of the same age group. For example your parents, your friend's parents would be a generation; you and your friends are a generation. A good rule of thumb might be 20 years since by the age of 20 people are considered to be in their child bearing years.

It depends on the average for the human breeding cycle. A breeding cycle being from the time most humans are born until the time they copulate and bear children. A generation could be around 30 years these days.

i don't think it's measured by years it depends on your where you start your lineage for example if you start with your mother the minute you were born would be the second generation.your mother would be the first.
