I live 500 ft from a Nextel tower. Would I be able to pick up a wireless internet connection from that tower. I was tempted to by a cheap wireless detection device from Walmart for $20 but maybe I'm wasting my money.

No. A cellular tower does not have Wi-Fi connectivity.

If you have a wireless adapter on your computer, then you could use the utility (that came with the adapteR) and see if your neighbors have Wi-Fi in their homes. And, if they have Wi-Fi and it isn't protected with a password, then you could get free Internet from them, as long as they don't detect your comptuer on their network and boot you off.

When we were looking for Internet service through our cell phone the only company we found that offered it was Verizon - that was almost two years ago, so things could have changed.

In terms of the wireless card, there are lots of wi-fi hot spots these days so you could use it in other places.

The type of wireless they have at Walmart is not the kind from a cellular base station. You need a cellular modem. It's extremely expensive. You're better off trying to get DSL or cable.
