I'd check to make sure that the "ball thingy" (actually, we call it a "joystick") doesn't have some debris that is keeping it knocked sideways.

That little rubber top (red in Thinkpads, blue on Dell) come off, so I'd pull it off and have a look around.

It sounds like a corrupted driver. If you don't know how to do the following, ask a friend to help:

Open the Control Panel, then 'System' and then 'Hardware' then 'Device Manager'. Click on Pointing Devices, find your touchpad and/or mouse then choose to uninstall the driver (right click). After uninstall (you may have to use the keyboard only at this point), totally power down.

Boot back up and let Windows "find" your mouse and/or touchpad and it will automatically reinstall the drivers. If it asks you to reboot again, do it.

This might solve your problem.

There might be something under the ball that is blocking communication. Dust, dirt, and lint can easily make its way under there and stop it from working properly. I clean mine out every now and then to make sure it doesn't get clogged with stuff.

If your computer is not working properly while you are working on it, it could be a problem with device drivers, hardware or software.
