Unlike an acoustic guitar, an electric guitar has no hole for transferring sound. You can learn how to play guitar without an amp, but being an electric guitar, you'd only get quiet noise. I recommend buying an amp so you know what your playing sounds like, at a volume that you can hear more clearly. And, if you're wanting to play rock, with the whine, I highly recommend an amp with a gain or overdrive switch/ knob. Good luck, and I have faith in your success.

I am not sure. I tried to play without an amp. After a while I quit playing electric and started playing classical. Electric guitar is easy, the effects make it sound good, If you play on it too long without effects, you might get bored and try to learn harder stuff.

I would say you don't need the amp. If you start playing more difficult pieces you can always go back to electric later.

To make this short: No, you can learn on an electric guitar without using an amp, and you can actually hear the strings and what you're doing with them. Having said THAT, there's nothing like the feeling of your ears pinned back by a mega-watt "cranked up to 10" full on amp stack. Cheers!

It is necessary unless the guitar is semi accoustic or you have extremely acute hearing and can block out other sounds. You can get a cheap 10 watt practice amp very easily to do the job.

You can learn the fingering, chords, etc. and alla that, but without an amp you wont get the volume and all the sounds .... You can get a small practice amp for under $50, would be well worth it to learn.

Yes but the sound won't be as good. If you don't want an amp, get an accoustic, learn to play on that, later get an electric

No I have an electric guitar and no it is not necessary to buy an amp but it can help because unless you can hear very well you need one but it isn't necessary!

No, you don't need an amp. You can hear the strings. It is not as loud as an acoustic, but you can hear it. I play mine without an amp all the time.

you can but you shouldnt, playing quietly can cause bad habits, cause you might sound good low but turn it up and you hear everything.
