Turtles can be way more maintenance than you think so be really sure you want to spend the money and the time, depending what you mean by "little sister" you'll end up cleaning the tank and taking care of him. Aquatic turtles are usaully the ones you find at pet stores and they are cheap, but you need a decent size tank and remember you'll be changing the water frequently and it's a lot of water. It will start to smell if not cleaned, if you go to the tortoise catagory you be even more in debt, they need lights and the right temp, and fresh veggies every day. like someone mentioned before you'll have to check size most grow way to large if they live as long as they are supposed too. Also turtles carry diseases that you can't see ( salmonella) so every time you or your sister picks up the turtle you'll have to wash your hands after. you may want to see if she is interested in hermit crabs or something else, in any event good luck no matter which way you go!!

turtles are very expensive to take care of turtle with food and the turtle will get to be the size of a dinner plate so he can`t live in a fish tank all his life he will need a pond and when youdon`t want him any more you can`t just thro him in a lake they eat feeder fish and shrimp. So before you get a turtle think about the extra costs

Before you buy, please understand that there are good ways and bad ways to raise a turtle, and that the good ways can cost about $100 to get the habitat set up right.

be aware of what your getting into. many turtles grow big and have long lives. they require IMMACULATELY clean enclosures, heating, access to UV lighting and many can grow up to have carapace diameters of a foot or more . many are omnivorous so you need to offer greens, and live insects. learn what you can care for and how to properly care for it. also know it is illegal in the U.S to sell a turtle with a carapace under 4''. have an accredited vet on hand, just in case.
